About the Department

The department of Statistics of Bu-Ali Sina University was established in 2008 and currently admission of students is done at B.A level. The students are capable of statistical analysis of economic, medical and industrial issues after graduation and are also prepared to handle especial statistical issues and solve problems arising out of them.

 

Career Opportunities

Statisticians can work in business, banks, industry, agriculture, and healthcare sectors as well as organizations and institutions related to Planning and Budget Organization. Most of the remaining jobs are associated with private sector, especially experiment, research, management, and public relations services. Some others engage in teaching statistics. A large number of statisticians work in state sector. A group of statistics experts working in state sector design studies for measuring population growth, consumer expenditure or unemployment. Others work in science, environment and agriculture sectors that might determine the rate of pesticides in drinking water, endangered species living in certain areas, or identify the type and determine the rate of the compost that is to be used for agriculture in different regions based on statistical analysis. Another group is hired in the national defense sector to determine the precision of new weapons and defense strategies. Since statisticians work in various sector, they often have different job positions. For example, a statistician that applies statistical methods and deductions in economy is known as an economic statistician, and a statistician that serves in public healthcare or medicine sector earns the title of epidemiologist. To teach and study in research centers associated with higher education and Ministry of Health, M.A or a higher degree is required. The courses that a statistician needs to pass include differential calculus, integral, statistical methods including parametric and non-parametric, design and analysis of experiments, applied multidimensional analysis and mathematical statistics.

 

Job positions in Iran

Many of the instructors and students of this field believe that graduates of Statistics are not faced with the problem of unemployment as much as the graduates of other fields of study. Graduates of this field can work in Planning and Budget Organization, banks, insurance offices, stock market, quality assessment sector of industrial centers and factories, statistics units of different ministries including Agriculture, Labor, Healthcare, Economic Affairs and Finance, Culture and Islamic Guidance, etc. Generally, most of the various governmental and private centers need to analyze their results and make decision based on their analysis which requires the use of the science of statistics in general and specific sense.

 

Future Outlook

Job opportunities for graduates of Statistics are favorable and they have a relatively high chance of finding jobs related to their field of study. State companies hire many of statisticians in fields of demography, agriculture, consumer- and producer-related surveys, social security, healthcare, meteorology, and environment quality. Statisticians might also be hired to control the quality of various products including pharmaceutical products, motor vehicles, and food and chemical substances produced by manufacturing companies.

In business companies, employees who are graduates of Statistics are trusted with the sales prediction, analysis of business conditions and solving administration issues to increase profits.
