The Faculty of Basic Sciences started admitting students right after the establishment of the university in 1976 and started its activities in a rented building as an educational institution. In June 6th 1976, construction and foundation work of the university was started. The premises of the faculty are one of the oldest buildings of the university which has an especial architecture and technical engineering structure and is considered a unique building by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

With the development of the university, the Central Organization, and faculties of Literature, Economics and Social Sciences were gradually separated from the premises. Currently faculties of Basic Sciences and Chemistry are located in this building and in near future the Faculty of Chemistry will be moved to another building, the construction of which is soon to be completed. It must be noted that the department of Chemistry was one of the departments of the Faculty of Basic Sciences which succeeded at establishing a separate faculty in 2006.
