Geology  is now a science that teaches us not just what the earth was like in the past but also why our still evolving planet behaves the way it does today. The advances made in geology have directly influenced investigations in lunar and planetary sciences, oceanography, remote sensing and satellite imagery, and a host of other subfields of the earth sciences.Geologists are responsible for the exploration of natural resources on land, under the oceans and eventually even in outer space; they are the only hope to establish accurate predictors of volcanic eruptions and earthquake disaster; they apply their knowledge about earth materials to establish environmentally safe locations for disposal of liquid and solid wastes; they are responsible for determining sound locations for pipelines, tunnels, bridges and dams; they study the quality and toxicity of our surface and ground water systems and provide the data for making environmentally sound decisions. All of these tasks are of immense importance not only to geologists but to all presen.

The Department of Geology at the Bu Ali Sina university  is active  in many aret and future citizens of planet earth.as of teaching, research, and scholarship. It has a 15 year  history (since 1986) of commitment to educating students in geology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research advances made by faculty and students within the department have made significant contributions to many areas of Earth Science including:  Engineering Geology ,Tectonic , Sedimentology , Structural Geology , Soil Mechanics ,  Earthquake , and Petrology.
The department has a chairman who administrate department. The chairman of department is elected by faculty members' votes for two years.

Admission to this department is achieved through a nationwide entrance examination held annually by the Ministry of Science , Research and Technology .
